Coach K Blasts Rose, Michigan

30 Mar

Let me preface my comments with this…Mike Krzyzewski is a snobbish, self-serving, condescending, self-righteous, egomaniacal, little troll. His holier than thou Duke attitude smells of jealousy and smarminess because he feels that nobody, and I mean absolutely nobody, should be talking about any other university but Duke when it comes to college basketball. And it almost seems as if he feels that Duke is THE basketball university in the NCAA and that nobody should look at his recruiting under the microscope while Jalen Rose suggests that Krzyzewski discriminates against inner city kids. It’s funny to me that Krzyzewski, who’s from Chicago which is an inner city full of basketball talent, cannot find players from his own backyard that he can recruit successfully, even missing the boat on potential NBA MVP Derrick Rose, now of the Chicago Bulls, and Juwan Howard, both from Krzyzewski’s hometown. Krzyzewski even goes so far to claim that Duke recruited Chris Webber, well I don’t hear Chris Webber coming out and backing that claim, nor do I see Krzyzewski pulling out anything showing the proof of recruitment to Chris Webber that he so “frankly” claims. What I do hear is the troll, aka Coach K, babbling out of the side of his mouth with his whiny voice and talking down the basketball program at the University of Michigan and the Fab Five’s legacy. Regardless of their inability to finish an NCAA tournament on top to close out their college careers and with the timeout that never was in 1993…sorry Chris Webber, the Fab Five’s impact on the young and old college basketball fans of all races (not just African American), is a part of history that may never repeat itself. Talent like that can’t be harvested all at once in one school so we have to appreciate it when we can, no matter the result of it.

In closing, I would like to express my sheer delight in seeing Duke get their collective asses handed to them by Arizona, thank you Wildcats! Suck on that bit of history “Coach K”!

Krzyzewski had some comments regarding Rose’s comments about Duke when he was an impressionable youngster in high school. More about the “Uncle Tom” comments than anything. To me this is nothing more than piling on. Personally I’m tired of hearing of it. What do you think Kentucky players were privately thinking before they played Texas Western back in 1965. Do you think they still harbor those same feelings? I don’t think so. Rose admitted that he said it and that’s how he thought back in 1992, when he was 18. Just because he was young doesn’t make it right, but I understand.

Here’s what the mighty Coach K had to say about Rose and Michigan.

“We were very successful against them and, to be quite frank with you, we recruited Chris Webber,” he said. “I didn’t recruit Jalen Rose because we had Grant Hill and I’m happy with that. We didn’t look at the other, Juwan Howard [because] we knew he wasn’t going to come to Duke. The other two kids we didn’t think were the caliber that could play as well as Thomas Hill and Brian Davis and Billy McCaffery. They’re good kids. They were good kids.”

“They had a heck of a run but, they didn’t leave anything, they didn’t establish anything there,” Krzyzewski said. “The guys that I had established something that Jay Williams continued to do 10 years later — the standards of what it meant to be a Duke basketball player.”

What was said there pretty much validates what Rose was saying and how he felt. At this point it’s just piling on. Where was Krzyzewski when the documentary first came out? He waits until his squad gets eliminated then he comes out and says something. How macho is that?

Of course I don’t think anyone that reads this to agree with what I said here, but it’s done and over and it’s time to put this subject to rest.

Duke won,but I still can’t stand them

7 Apr

Yes,Duke is the king of college basketball once again.True, they won,but some of the favorites were knocked off on their way to the top.Thing is,I still can’t stand them.I can’t bring myself to root for them even if there was a gun to my head.Well, maybe I could in a few extreme cases. This is not a jump on the bandwagon kind of hate. It’s been a lifelong deal for me.
Way back, when I first started watching college basketball,I didn’t know too much about them, but the only teams I knew in the ACC were North Carolina,Virginia, and Maryland.Didn’t hear much of Duke,so I never cared much for them. Therefore,I didn’t like them.As time went on my dislike for grew worse. Then came the 1986 NCAA tournament.A historical favorite to this day,Louisville made the finals.Duke was their opponent in that game.It was that tournament that made me realize I really didn’t like Duke.I wanted every team tey played to beat them,no matter the odds.Duke lost,72-69, and I was so full of glee when it happened.I will admit that in next year’s tournament, when they played Indiana, another team I’m not fond of,I pulled for them to win that game.Over time, they’ve been portrayed as the good guys of college basketball.I liken them more to the preppies that happen to be good, beat you and remind you of it for years on end.You know, players that inner city kids can’t stand and want to choke the life out of.
They always seem to be overrated. No matter who is on that team, they will get a top 10 ranking at the start of the year.Even in the Cherokee Parks days they were getting the rankings until the team tanked. When tourney time rolls around,it seems they never garner anything lower than a 3 seed.I know they’ve been seeded lower than that, but they’re always the favorite going into their opening round game. The coach Mike Krzyzewski,is portrayed as the patron saint of college basketball, taking that mantle from Dean Smith, even though he is one of the most foul mouthed coaches around. He gets his four and five star preppie recruits from the suburban areas around the nation.no doubt these kids can ball, but I can’t stand them since they’re at Duke.I like Nolan Smith, but since he plays for Duke,I really can’t bring myself to pull for the kid. This golden boy Duke image has really kicked in around 1991,when they took down big, bad,UNLV.UNLV at that point was like the Miami of college basketball. You know, too much swag for the game. Also, with the ultimate rebel as coach Jerry Tarkanian, everyone always thought there was something slimy about the Runnin Rebels. To this day ask anyone, they will tell you that UNLV threw that game.It was a gift. The Rebels crushed Duke the year before by 30,with basically the same teams coming back.Duke was thought of as the good guys in that game. The cowboys with the white hats. The year after, they repeated beating an upstart Kentucky team recovering from probation in one of the most epic games in NCAA tournament history,on a Christian Laettner buzzer beater.Thing is Laettner shouldn’t have even been in the game.Raeson:for stomping on Kentucky’s Aminu Timberlake’s chest.Years down the road I saw that happen with Houston’s Aubrey Coleman, and he was kicked out against Arizona. Then they beat my home team Michigan in the finals.Michigan had the Fab Five and to some represented everything that was wrong with college basketball, while Duke was everything that was right about it.On top of all this we have to hear Duke,er,Dick Vitale singing their praises every time he gets in front of a camera.I know there are some people who like them, and will disagree with me.There are some that have different reasons. But in the end,I will give them credit for winning another National Championship, but I simply cannot ever be a fan of Duke basketball.

Maybe this is why I realized I could never become a sports broadcaster.

Duke has quietly built a one seed resume

7 Mar

A 32 point thrashing of rival North Carolina gave Duke a share of the ACC regular season title. The win also should give them a top seed in the NCAA tournament. The argument only becomes stronger if they win the ACC tournament.Even though everyone says the ACC is having a down year, you have to give the Blue Devils their due.Only because North Carolina tanked severely this season, everyone says the ACC is down and that maybe Duke shouldn’t get a number one seed.I’m not the biggest Duke fan,but who else are you gonna put alongside Kansas,Kentucky, and Syracuse.Exactly.To me the ACC is still a formidable conference this year.Even though the mighty Tar Heels are down, the rest of the conference has stepped up its play this year.for the most part duke has taken everyone’s best shot like always and is standing at the top of the hill. Also,Mike Krzyzewski has done this with limited depth. They’ve done this without a lot of hype and hoopla of past Duke teams.Don’t hate on the Blue Devils. They deserve a number one seed and you know they’ll be a tough out in the tournament like always.
